Brown Butter Ice Cookies
Every Christmas, the most sought after cookie is the one that our Grandma Garvey used to make. A crispy not-too-sweet brown sugar cookie topped with a beautiful icing featuring browned butter.

Brown Butter Iced Cookies
Cookie Ingredients
¾ Cup Softened Butter
½ Cup Dark Brown Sugar
1 Tb White Sugar
1 Egg Yolk
1 tsp Vanilla
2 Cups Flour
Additional sugar for pressing
Icing Ingredients:
½ Cup Butter
2 ½ Cups Powdered Sugar
1 tsp Vanilla
3-4 Tb Milk
Decorative sprinkles, if desired (the colored sugar kind, none of that nonpareil bullshit)
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350
Cream together Butter, Brown Sugar, and White Sugar
Beat in Egg Yolk and Vanilla
Slowly mix in Flour
Optional, let dough chill for an hour to make it less sticky
Shape dough into balls and place on a cookie sheet. Dip the bottom of a glass in water and then in sugar. Smash the balls down with the sugared glass.
Bake for 7 to 9 minutes, cookies won’t spread much so watch edges for doneness
Icing:
Brown the butter on the stovetop. Remove from heat when it reaches the desired color.
If you don’t know how to brown butter, Sally says it better than I can. Here’s her tutorial: https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/how-to-brown-butter/
Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and a couple of tablespoons of milk. Stir and add more milk as necessary.
Spread icing on cooled cookies and add your decorative sprinkles. The icing firms up fast, so it’s best to move quickly. You may need to add a little milk as you go or put the icing in the microwave for a few seconds to loosen it up. Enjoy!
